My Pixel 9 just showed me an ad in the notifications for device protection.

I thought I'd never see the day.

I guess the iPhone equivalent is them offering AppleCare for new devices.

“Ad notifications” doesn’t seem like the most illuminating phrase to describe this though - is there a better one?

When the hardware you paid isn't your anymore. I guess hardware enshittification is creeping into all the devices. Even the PC monitors have started doing this now

That is usually the moment when I start looking for alternatives or at least an alternative to their standard apps.

I had an Oppo phone that managed to serve me a single ad in the file manager. I immediately swapped it to the Fossify file manager even though I lost some functionality.

Well, at least there's a robust alternative OS for Pixel phones in GrapheneOS.

It's an ad to spend more money for your pixel, and not an ad for 3rd party services, but will it stop here?

They've already been periodically/rarely doing ads like that for a number of years now, and it's stopped there. It's not a new thing.
