Slow but necessary

My interest in HN has decreased since it feels every other news is about AI

However I'll use the other links provided here, as it takes 10s to display

ASalazarMX41 minutes ago
HN reflects what their users (or people trying to influence them) post most. A few years ago it was flooded with crypto, a few years later it will be flooded with something else.
sammy0910about 2 hours ago
something that makes this website different from the others, is it lets you filter by _any_ combination of topics, and allows you to edit them live and in real time.

see (view on desktop)

https://sprinklz.io/demo/hackerNews

for a more detailed example

thanks for the your thoughts, and i will also keep working on making it faster.

I like AI and AI news, but can't stand the endless Anslopic Claude ads.

All this site ever talks about is Claude. It's so annoying. We'd use it if it was good (it's not).

How does it do its filtering?

There's scope for an incredibly cheeky joke about AI here... but I'll hold myself back :)

Does this use AI to determine whether content is about AI?
MrLeapabout 3 hours ago
you could look for the substring "AI" in the title and get 95% of the way there.
busymom0about 3 hours ago
That would miss a lot of posts.

Here's how mine looks using my method:

https://imgur.com/a/P1qMIok

9 out of 30 posts have been removed.

Steps:

Install uBlock Origin Lite. Then create a custom filter:

    news.ycombinator.com##tr.athing:has(a:has-text(/\b(?:A\.?I\.?|A\.?G\.?I\.?|LLMs?|GPTs?|TPU|NPU|RAG|MoE|RLHF|xAI)\b|Anthropic|agent|super-?intelligence|Blackwell|Cerebras|ChatGPT|Claude|Cohere|Command\s*R|Context\s*window|Copilot|Cursor|DALL-E|deep\s*learning|DeepSeek|ElevenLabs|Fine-tun(?:e|ing)|Flux|Gemini|GenAI|Generative|Gemma|Grok|Groq|H100|Hallucination|harness(?:es)?|Hugging\s*Face|LangChain|Llama|LlamaIndex|Midjourney|Mistral|Ollama|OpenAI|OpenRouter|Perplexity|prompt|Qwen|Runway\s*(?:AI|ML)|Gen-[1-4](?:\.5)?|Sora|Synthetic\s*data|token|vibecod|vLLM|Whisper/i)):xpath(. | following-sibling::tr[1])
Any improvements to above filter are welcome.
mschuster91about 2 hours ago
"Cursor" and "Copilot" are generic words sadly that you may find in other unrelated contexts, I'd take these out, and "prompt" is regularly used in headlines regarding political news.
sammy0910about 2 hours ago
yes.
sammy0910about 3 hours ago
I previously worked on this, but made substanital improvements to the underlying implementation, and now the filters work much better.

This is also a general purpose tool that you can modify/customize

I initially read that as "Hacker News will reduce priority for AI driven content" and was wondering why it was announced on a random website instead of this one.

Just pretending that AI doesn't exist or doesn't matter is one way to go.

I think we might be getting close to an era where some people section off areas of land or the internet and ban AI and humanoid robots in that area. I know there are a lot of people who want that.

The problem is that AI is getting better and better at impersonating humans.

Eventually you may see a convergence, where the New Luddite Zoos are just more constrained variations of the normal Human Zoos. Enforced by superhuman AI.

> Just pretending that AI doesn't exist or doesn't matter is one way to go.

I don't think thats a common position on this site. It'd be more accurate to say that people want balanced content.

I use AI quite a lot in my work, but a ton of AI content is just thinly-veiled marketing and not particularly interesting, IMO.

> I think we might be getting close to an era where some people section off areas of land or the internet and ban AI and humanoid robots in that area

So basically we'll end up with a version of the amish that are stuck in the early 2000s instead of the 1800s.

Being aware about something is not the same as actively participating in that for work and is also different from doing it for education or entertainment.

Somewhat absurd imo seeing two of these types of sites being the top posts. But as they say the market speaks. What would be more fascinating imo is to track the average article shift from removal over time.

Alternatively, go to /newest and vote for what you want to see on the front page.

Can you just do reduced priority for Anthropic?

When people complain about the incessant Claude glazing in posts and comments totally dominating the content of the site - it always gets twisted into “people don’t like AI”

But really we are just sick of the fucking Claude ads. It’s non-stop. Should be illegal how much those fuckers advertise.

Current thread:

Ask HN: Can we please limit the AI news flood?

NeedNewForumsabout 3 hours ago
When people ask for alternatives, I think they mean a different admin/investor behind the scenes too.

Reddit and HN share the same investors.

Unslop.news is still HN content and users.

Lobsters is like invite-only HN - maybe even more insufferable than this place in that regard.

People want something new, not the same corrupt people like Garry Tan and PG all the time.

I'm sick of YC and HN - they are barely technical and invest only in rich kids from other countries.

I personally want something entirely new - new admins.

ilakshabout 2 hours ago
Maybe check out Mastodon, Matrix, (new) Freenet, etc.
Yizahiabout 2 hours ago
Mastodon's UI is horrible. At least for people who never used Xitter. Why did a new company (at a moment of Mastodon initial release) copied already ancient and by then pointless limitations? Character limit, linear feed, tags in text, no advanced formatting etc. And then there are registration problem (where to register), the retention/safety problem (what if a benevolent admin of your instance nuked your account, now what?), the discovery problem etc. I'm permanently baffled at the decision process of Mastodon developers.
mschuster91about 2 hours ago
Mastodon is just as bad, it suffers from the same problem as most of the Fediverse it inspired, admins of large instances bitchfighting with one another and holding their users hostage...

Not really, you can ask in the chat room for an invitation.
Yizahiabout 1 hour ago
It's literally not recommended right on the About page, along the lines of "you shouldn't ask for invite right after joining, hang around chat instead". Well, I've checked it. They are talking about Trump something or other. None of those users I know at any level. So what's that "hanging out" entails then? Go invade a chat between acquaintances and randomly rant about Trump? Yeah, that will surely establish a good outlook, lol. And IRC is an extremely unfriendly way of talking to people, for newcomers. How does one even injects himself in a wall of messages between people talking about something live? I've never seriously used IRC because of that and I doubt I will learn that in the future.

This is a system which pretends to be open, but in reality, one needs to dance to some unwritten rules to some unknown users for unclear time. Meh...
