Chinese Industry Is Starting to Wean Off Fossil Fuels

Many may be unaware of how rapidly China is electrifying to move off of fossil fuels. They have destroyed oil demand equivalent to annual UK imports over the last six months through electrifying mobility (light and heavy vehicles). This is important signal.

Why is this important signal? Because it is a strong indicator of current manufacturing and deployment rate of electrical light and heavy vehicles, and should be anticipated to go faster over time. The last parts of the world to develop, India and Africa, will go all in on electric out of economics and proximity to China for imports. We are potentially close to peak global oil demand, which is great news for mitigating climate change.

China is currently bottle necked on marine capacity for EV exports, but is working to expand this capacity. As of this comment, China has sufficient manufacturing capacity to meet total global electric vehicle demand.

> Chinese vehicle exports exceeded 1 million units in both June and July, implying an annualized pace of more than 12 million vehicles, Kristoffersen said. That compares with fewer than 1 million Chinese vehicle exports before the Covid-19 pandemic, emphasizing the scale of the country’s emergence as an auto-exporting power.

> China’s oil demand is expected to fall by 600,000 barrels a day in 2026 on the impact of the US-Iran war and spread of electric vehicles, according to the research arm of Sinopec Group, the top state-owned refiner.

> “We were actually expecting a 300,000 to 500,000 barrel-a-day of growth for this year’s demand, but currently, after the war, you see China’s oil demand shrank very quickly,” Fairy Wang, vice president at the Sinopec Economics & Development Research Institute, said at an industry event in Singapore.

> The projected decline marks a sharp shift for the world’s biggest crude importer following decades of expansion, with the rapid build-out of renewable energy including battery technologies now cutting into demand for traditional fuels. Last month, Sinopec Chairman Hou Qijun said that China’s crude demand had probably peaked last year, earlier than previous estimates.

> “In the past 20 years, China is actually contributing 50% to 70% of the world’s incremental demand growth,” Wang said. “Currently, we need to accept a larger economy, especially for China, with almost no growth anymore,” she added, referring to the absence of additional oil consumption.
