Expired credit cards revived by researchers to make unauthorized payments

A homeless friend of mine was rather brazenly proud of his method to use an expired credit card to board the bus. While the fareboxes were accepting credit card swipes 25 years ago, they had no connectivity to authorize in real-time, so the transaction consisted entirely of trusting the rider.
