Everyone needs own their own machine that is an extension of their intelligence

In the US, phone numbers used to be locked in similar to this too. But then regulations changed and now everyone can port their phone number away to some other providers.

You can also just not use these services.

I suspect we will eventually bifurcate as a society - those that are inextricably online, abstracted away from reality, and those that say "to hell with this, I'm looking elsewhere" and hit the power button.
