> If someone threatened me with death or offered a hefty ransom, I would be able to check their mails, sensitive documents or just browser history. And I am happy to never have been in that situation.

That sounds like a pretty sensible reason to not trust someone no? Politicians don't make the most sensible decisions at a time, but the ones were if they were to not work wouldn't be blamed on them.

Let's say there is an attack on Google or [insert random engineer name working for belgian goverment] and thousands of emails from politicians were leaked. The public outcry would be wildly different. In the case of google they would talk about how can a company hold so much sensitive data and power blah blah blah. In the case of random engineer much of the blame would be on the politician on why did they rely on a random person having access to all emails and sensitive information instead of a reliable company like google.

Sometimes the most popular answer is the best one because if you are wrong then everyone is wrong too.

The article doesn’t really make the point as clear as the snappy headline suggests.

Regardless of that, Belgium should IMO follow some of the other EU countries and invest in OSS solutions that they host/control rather than rely on US tech. But things always move slowly with Belgium’s convoluted political system.

Beyond what is captured in the headline, there is no substance to this post

US president is confirmed russian agent (the only reason why he won 2016 election). I am more worried about getting weapon systems from US. Like what if US decides to invade, and just switch off our F35 fighter jets at the same time?

Also importing energy from US seems quite risky (like dependecy on russia was). Belgium needs to promote their own gas extraction in coastal waters. Maybe look at local coal!

And i totally agree with treason charges!

I don't think the US can brick F35s but I do think the maintenance contracts essentially require full aircraft logs going to Lockheed at all times or the "warranty" is void - so America will have a good idea where jets are and what they're doing.

I also don't think Trump is a Russian agent. The entire US government is run by AIPAC and a cabal of people like Epstein. AIPAC controls both sides of the house and Epstein accumulated such heinous blackmail across the board that nobody in any position of power would dare expose it because it's just too fragile and compromises too many people.

The idea that we would trust America with our tech is so insane that I do think its treason

I’d rather read a headline than read the site

not surprising, european political elites seem to do whatever they want regardless of whether it's good for their countries

The occasional saintly individual aside, no political elites - anywhere, ever - actually care about the good of their countries. They're usually willing to give lip service. And seriously pretend if that's a necessary means to some important-to-them end.

Like many other things, late-stage capitalism's obsession with short-term results and delocalization of financial interests have made this problem far worse. It is a perfectly good plan to get rich by driving your country into the ground, then move to Switzerland before the collapse gets too messy.
