I appreciate that whoever is approving naming at Dyson doesn't care about making boring names.

- Pencil Fluffycones

- Ball Animal 3 Extra

- V16 Piston Animal Submarine

These are real product names that they were happy to ship. I like that they ship these absurd sounding names.

The press release includes an image of a person brushing and looking at an image of their teeth on a phone. If you are actively brushing with toothpaste, the quality of the image will likely be as good as an unprepped colonoscopy.

It’s unlikely to yield any actionable information, other than scratching the pimple-popping gross-up itch.

On second thought, I am now half-expecting a home colonics device from Dyson. Easy setup… just lay down on your side in your bathtub.

> unprepped colonoscopy

That is a phrase I didn't have on my HN bingo card for the day.

That’s why they developed a special toothpaste with less foaming (see the presentation video on youtube)
ricardobeat•about 1 hour ago

    > This includes a proprietary non-foaming toothpaste, formulated without SLS (a common foaming agent)
to help keep foam out of the way so the camera can see clearly and support Gap Optical Targeting™,
alongside a low-foaming mouthrinse formulated for use with the precision jet

Plot twist: you can use the same device for mouth and colon cleaning.

Toothbrushes are a crappy device. I’ve seen some stuff lately that’s like a whole mouth brush, like a mouth guard. With a small pipe to the mouth guard feeding water, you can pretty much car wash your mouth every morning in 60 seconds. Sloshing water around in your mouth often creates way more pressure allowing water to go through the gaps in your teeth (cleaning them). But the waterpik sellers will convince you that isn’t true.

That’s the problem with highly skillful people that follow tradition. I’m sure the engineers are brilliant behind this (camera toothbrush designers), but they are still following tradition of this old idea.

Anyways. Sometimes you have to trust that you are well beyond tradition and are free to redefine all rules. Be fearless.

Whole mouth brush was a gimmick for almost two decades if not more, maybe these days its more adequate but I can only imagine what it could do to gums. Doctors can’t wait..

That whole mouth brush is also crazy exspensive, while I'd assume Philips' Sonicare line is well and profitable

I have a Waterpik Fusion 2.0

Sometimes I’ll add mouthwash or hydrogen-peroxide to the tank, it works well. Usually I start with a quick rinse, then a brush with the flosser on, then a finishing brush with the flosser off.

I see this and am unsure if it’s over-engineering a less effective solution. It’s neat, but I can’t say it excites me; am curious to see reviews and comparisons. The form factor does seem a bit odd though, visually it’s mediocre imo.

I had some deep-ish gum pockets and switched to this pattern, and many of them resolved over a year without intervention:

0. tongue scraper 1. brush with normal toothpaste 2 min 2. floss 3. mouthwash 4. rinse 5. brush with a dry toothpaste that you don't rinse

I started to treat it like an important health step, less a chore. Like exercise or cooking healthy food instead of buying shit takeout.

bryanlarsen•about 1 hour ago
I just hit 6mm in one location. I have 4 months to avoid an intervention. Do you have a source / more info?

The year is 2031, the Meta LlamaBrush won't start until it's played a 30s unskipable ad for Doritos spearmint.

Meh. My toothbrush engine has around 100 trillion pathways in the neural network and sophisticated vision and motor capabilities.

Also it didn't push Brexit for years then piss of to Singapore.

I saw this on X and assumed it was well done satire of the current state of the industry.

> Dyson CameraJet™ runs on 16 million lines of code

Yikes...

mikert89•about 2 hours ago
Thought I read elsewhere that if these get dirty they are essentially blowing dirty water into your gums, which can cause health problems

tools like this almost need the same level of sanitization you would see at the dentist.

other than that, I am very interested

feverzsj•about 1 hour ago
Qualified product should use antimicrobial plastic. You still need to disinfect it using mild disinfectant like iodophor.
piskov•about 1 hour ago
Don’t get it dirty
vel0city•about 1 hour ago
You're most likely using it in the same room where you poop, probably storing it next to a basin where you wash your dirty hands, and putting it in one of the dirtiest places in/on your body daily. It gets soaking wet hopefully twice daily.

I hate to break it to you, but it will get dirty.

ge96•about 1 hour ago
100K Pixel lol I guess 0.1MP doesn't sound impressive

Idk that is kind of trippy to see your own teeth in real time as you brush them

What a stupid design. The jet stream can't even reach last back teeth.
nosioptar•about 1 hour ago
It wouldn't be a dyson without a shitty design.

The only dyson products I've used that didn't suck were their vacuums. (To be clear, their vacuums are shit and do not suck as well as even a cheap shark.)

ok, the pun is good

Hmm, they didn't go with CamJet..

I don’t even see how you can share direct to TikTok with this? Or have they got their own social network for toothbrushing? Can I use this to talk with someone using the Dyson ActiveDouche?
